La Billarda

Info

Two wooden sticks are needed: The billiard, which is placed on the ground and perpendicularly on another stick diagonally.

The object of the game is to overcome the stick with the billiard. Placed on the ground, you have to hit its tip with the stick to make it rise and, once in the air, hit it again with the stick to launch it to the pole. This is the only way to score points, because if you fail to hit the billiard when it is in the air, or if it is thrown out of the playing field when you hit it, the thrower must return to the serving area and throw again.

History

It has been played since the Middle Ages and not only in Galicia, but also in Asturias, the Canary Islands (in fact, it is one of the traditional Canarian games), the Basque Country where it is called billarda, liriu and txirikila, and in countries such as Pakistan, India and Malaysia.

As a curious fact, it has come to be called Galician baseball because of its slight resemblance to the American sport.
